Press Release – JazzLeeds celebrates its 15th birthday this September!

Our fifteenth birthday! It's been lots of fun since we started in the Seven Arts in September 2007We have a lot of people to thank for helping us put on some of the best jazz around - and to pick up a couple of jazz awards along the way!

Why not come and help us celebrate at the Chapel Allerton Arts Festival 1-4 September – four jazz events to choose from – try all of them!

The focus is on FUN – we have jazz and dance, jazz and silent movies, the best contemporary music and an open-air Jazz Sunday for all the family!

Let the good times roll!

Thursday 1 September 7pm @ Queens Hall, Immaculate Heart, Harrogate Road.

Learn to jive and swing dance with the Two Rivers Swing Band and dance tutors from the Swing Cats

Silent Movie: Buster Keaton “In One Week” and “The Boat” with Adam Fairhall on piano Friday 2nd September 7:00pm @Seven Arts

A feature on silent movies with piano accompaniment. Music has always been present in film event when we can’t hear it. We’ve all seen pictures form the early 20th century with organists or pianists accompanying silent films. Music – be It improvised or scored- can add such a lot to early films. Adam Fairhall is a master at providing a contemporary take on the traditional approach to music for silent films, and he will be heard accompanying two Buster Keaton shorts – “In one Week” and “The Boat”. Adam will also be giving a short talk about the history of musicians accompanying films

Marco Woolf Sextet with support from Sarah Heneghan

Saturday 3rd September 7:30pm @Seven Arts

The best in young northern contemporary jazz. Marco Woolf is influenced by the likes of Nick Drake and John Martyn, and the music that he makes can prove similarly complex to categorise. His lyrics have earned him a reputation as a self-evidently skilled storyteller – and his thoughtful instrumentation too is just as crucial to his compositions. Support is from solo Sheffield percussionist Sarah Heneghan with “Power Out”
