Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Bim Williams' Quartet @ The Railway, Stockport - Dec. 14

Bim Williams (guitar); Richard Jones (piano); Peter Hartley (bass guitar); Danny Ward (drums).

Although the gig had been advertised as being by a trio, what we saw on the bandstand was a quartet comprised of four outstanding musicians. They have all previously appeared at the Railway in various line-ups and recently I mentioned how bowled over I was by the brilliant playing of guitarist Bim Williams and, after tonight’s performance, I have no reason to change my opinion. He opened the show with a blues original which he called Railway Blues in a tribute to the host venue. He was assisted by Richard Jones who I was pleased to see was utilising the house upright and making it sound great.

On drums was a veteran of the Manchester Jazz Scene, Danny Ward, a highly adaptable drummer who always knows how to get a good sound on his kit. Holding down the bass chair and doing a great job was Peter Hartley who gets a very full sound on bass guitar. His solos were most impressive and he gets better every time I hear him.

If I had to pick out a particular tune that I liked best I would find it difficult, although Bim showed he could handle fast bop tunes when he tackled Parker's Moose the Mooche , but I’ve got to say he picked  a great selection of tunes to play tonight.

The next jazz gig at the Railway is on Thursday, Dec. 14 which is a special charity event featuring the RA6 Big Band. Mike Farmer

Railway Blues; All of You; How Long Has This Been Going On?; Christmas Tme Is Here; Lets Cool One; Tea For Two; Moose the Mooche; Four On Six; Easy To Remember; I Love You; Black Orpheus; Christmas Song.
