Rico's (Saturday) Popup Louis - June 19

(Screenshot by Russell)
Rico Tomasso (trumpet, flugelhorn, vocals); Will Barry (piano)

A Popup Louis on a Saturday? Yes, Rico Tomasso had been working up in Edinburgh for a couple of days and decided to delay his regular Friday evening session twenty four hours. What's more, Rico's journey home was delayed due to all trains south being fully booked...something to do with several thousand Scots descending on London for the little matter of a keenly anticipated sporting fixture. Joining Rico this evening, none other than Kansas Smitty's regular, pianist Will Barry.

Rico and Will set about playing an hour-long set of standards which would include one or two numbers new to Will. You and the Night and the Music opened the show. A tune prone to quasi-operatic interpretation, in the hands of Rico and Will the Arthur Schwartz-Howard Dietz number escaped any such treatment. Rico singing Comes Love came as a surprise. Our host just about got away with it. Flugelhorn time...a brief conference: tempo agreed, 'from the top' etc...They Say It's Spring. You wouldn't know our duo had played no more than a couple of gigs together (Kansas Smitty's included). A Disney tune for Sarah Spencer kept Rico on his flugel, the number, taken at a snail's pace, When You Wish upon a Star. To close, Dearly Beloved. Russell
