Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Live from Joe's - June 5

(Screenshot by Russell)
Joe Webb (piano); Will Sach (double bass); Ella Hohnen-Ford (vocals)

Live from Joe's, two o'clock Saturdays. This afternoon Joe Webb once again welcomed bassist Will Sach and special guest, Royal Academy of Music graduate, vocalist Ella Hohnen-Ford. Summery, casual, relaxed, a brew at hand, Joe once again demonstrated why he is in the top echelon of British pianists. Behind every great pianist you're likely to find American bassist Will Sach (see photo, Will positioned behind Joe, Ella in the foreground), these two young men could swing the proverbial off any tune you care to name, Joe effortlessly sounding like Nat Cole, Jelly Roll Morton and Art Tatum all in one.

From I Only Have Eyes for You to Just in Time this would prove to be one fabulous hour's worth of jazz. Ella - what a name! - sang superbly, toying with the lyric, scatting, I Can't Get Started and Manhattan two standout tunes of many standout tunes. Bassist Will took five as Joe and Ella played a duo version of I'll Get By, Joe's piano playing simply brilliant, stride playing seemingly comes naturally to him. The hour flew by, Will rejoined the party to close the set with Just in Time.

Hi Jen, I've added a F/b link to the original post that I hope works for you. Sometimes livestreams only have a limited shelf life
