Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Joe Webb plays Art Tatum - June 12

(Screenshot by Russell)
Joe Webb (piano); Dave Archer (guitar); Will Sach (double bass)

It was in November last year when pianist Joe Webb's trio featuring guitarist Dave Archer and bassist Will Sach played a storming Art Tatum session at Kansas Smitty's. Fast forward to a glorious summer's afternoon in Joe's kitchen and there they were - Joe, Dave and Will - reprising their memorable London set. For the most part the set list mirrored the Kansas Smitty's performance. From I Got Rhythm to Flying Homethis was gob-smacking stuff.

Highlights? Honestly, the one hour set was one long highlight. Joe's amazing technique, Dave's classy rhythmic accompaniment, Will's great sound and sense of time, these are three musicians at the top of their game. A dazzling Cocktails for TwoI Would do Anything for YouSoft Winds (Dave in a blues vein), Dave soloing impressively on I Know That You Know, smiles all round, they were having fun. The effortless swing-feel to On the Sunny Side of the Street, Joe's lightness of touch, Will's resonant sound, what a treat! And to close a marvellous set, Flying Home, and boy, did they fly?!

A superb set. And here's the good news, Joe and the boys will be taking their Art Tatum show on the road in August, calling in at Newcastle's Lit & Phil on Friday 20th and Saltburn Arts in the evening! Whatever you do, don't miss these concerts, they'll be spoken about for years to come.
