Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Dean Stockdale Trio @ The Lubetkin Theatre, Peterlee - June 29

It had been a while, what with the pandemic and all that. East Durham College will shortly close its doors for the summer break but not before Jazz at the Lubetkin squeezed in a lunchtime session featuring the Dean Stockdale Trio. Considering the lengthy period during which few jazz gigs were possible, it was good to see Peterlee's flagship jazz promoter back in action.
As ever, familiar faces turned out and with a good few students in attendance it made for an enjoyable occasion. Pianist Dean Stockdale presented a balanced programme of GASbook numbers alongside some original compositions. A Stockdale arrangement of Moon River introduced his trio featuring bassist Mick Shoulder and drummer Abbie Finn.

In a Sentimental Mood and Stockdale's Mia's Lullaby were afforded sensitive treatments, the latter showcasing Finn's use of brushes. Promise the Moon, the eponymous track from Stockdale's recently released album took centre stage (copies of the  CD were available at the door) and an interesting arrangement of On the Sunny Side of the Street closed the hour-long programme. The Jazz at the Lubetkin concert series is due to resume in September. Details nearer the time. Russell
