Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

THE GLOBE SHORTLISTED IN NATIONAL AWARDS - your last chance to vote.

(Press release)

Newcastle’s community-owned music venue The Globe has been shortlisted for a Co-op of the Year Award – a prestigious accolade that honours co-ops across the UK who have shown a commitment to the co-operative principles, stepping up and supporting their communities during the pandemic.

Dave Parker, co-chair of the co-op that owns The Globe, said, “We’re so excited to be one of just five co-ops shortlisted for the Small Community Co-op of the Year Award. The winners will be decided by a public vote – so we’re a

sking all our members, employees, customers and supporters to cast a vote for us.

“The pandemic has been so hard for so many of us and we’ve done our best to adapt our co-op during this challenging time. We have continued to operate, providing income for musicians, employment for staff, and joy for isolated people. We broadcast 15 events a month including jazz, folk, rock, and classical. Performers and technicians work in a covid-secure environment to deliver high-quality livestreams. These have been viewed by thousands and have raised over £40,000 for musicians.

“If we’ve inspired you, impressed you, helped you or made a positive difference in any way we’d love it if you could vote for us.”

The Co-op of the Year Awards 2021 are organised by Co-operatives UK – the network for Britain’s thousands of
co-operative businesses – and sponsored by The Co-operative Bank. The Globe has been shortlisted in the category of Small Community Co-op.

Voting closes at midnight on the 1 June and the winners will be announced in early July.
