This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Joe Webb: Live at Oliver's Jazz Bar - April 3

Lester Young with the Oscar Peterson Trio live from Oliver's Jazz Bar. If only! However, present day greats were in the house...Messrs Riley Stone-Lonergan, Joe Webb, Conor Chaplin and Corrie Dick. Live at Joe's for one week only streamed from Oliver's Jazz Bar in London. This Saturday afternoon session was eagerly anticipated but...the audio was absolutely terrible. Joe's spoken introductions were inaudible, likewise his upright couldn't be heard, Conor's bass boomed, countless online comments implored the quartet to sort out the sound, to stop, if necessary. 

Half way through the third number (Stardust) the sound suddenly improved, considerably so. At last we could hear Joe's announcements...Tea for Two as a feature for drummer Corrie with a quicksilver tenor solo from Riley followed by some tremendous piano playing from Joe. Riley moved out of camera shot to be handed a piece of paper which he passed to Joe. Only now did Joe realise the extent of the poor audio feed. Moving into I Can't Give You Anything but Love, suddenly Joe's piano could be heard! Conor and Corrie engaged in a lengthy, sensitive exchange with Riley waiting in the wings to take it out. 

And to finish, a rip-roaring Indiana. Ah! One more! A reprise of I'm Confessin'. A great set but, oh, dear, the sound...
