Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

The Geordie Jazzwise.

Just as the 1953 F A Cup Final became known as "The Matthews Final"  - so called after Sir Stanley Matthews, then just plain Stan, whose Blackpool team beat Bolton Wanderers,* in years to come, the May 2021 issue of Jazzwise magazine could well be known as "The Gilby Jazzwise". Not only does the 2019 APPJAG winning vocalist's photograph appear on the magazine's page 3 - no it's not that kind of page 3 - there's also an interview with her as well as a four star review of her album Living in Shadows.

Not that Zoë is the only north-easterner to be found within the magazine's pages. The Abbie Finn Trio's The Northern Perspective is placed second in one of the charts - beaten only by Dave Holland! An article about the Cheltenham Jazz Festival's programme mentions saxophonist Faye MacCalman and guitarist Chris Montague. Stevie Winwood too is listed so the chances are that Paul Booth will be in the line-up.

Cleveland Watkiss is also in there but, despite his name, I don't think he's from Middlesbrough!

The May issue of Jazzwise is available from W.H.Smith's and other retailers.

*In that year's competition, Gateshead beat Liverpool, Hull City and Plymouth Argyle before going out to Bolton in the 6th round - Zoë (and BSH) did even better in their cup finals!
