Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Saturday @ the 606

(Press release)
Saturday 10 April
PAUL MORAN'S 'SMOKIN' B3'
"..the B3er-horn man still knows how to work a groove....Moran hums on the Leslie amps and Price glides with cool strings...a juke joint that jumps" Jazz Weekly; "Moran's accompaniment throughout was just right....and his keyboard playing shined" Downbeat.
8:00pm Fondly known as the ‘Jazz Geordie’ Paul Moran has gone on to make a formidable name for himself since beginning his career as a songwriter and composer in 1988. Currently Music Director for Van Morrison and appearing on a number of Van’s albums, including 'Astral Weeks Live at The Hollywood Bowl', other artists with whom Paul has toured and recorded include household names such as Natalie Cole, Roger Daltrey, George Michael, Cilla Black, Michael Ball and Chrissie Hynde to mention just a few. A terrific Hammond organ player & pianist, for this 606 livestream Paul will be featuring numbers from his latest record “Smokin B3 Volume 2” which he describes as “tipping its hat to the 1960’s style of Jimmy Smith and Richard “Groove” Holmes”. Along with Paul on organ and bass pedals, the band includes vocalist & 606 favourite Jo Harrop, iconic Scottish guitarist Jim Mullen and ace drummer Mez Clough (Van Morrison, Madness). This promises to be a memorable night of lush, atmospheric soul jazz.
