Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Louis Armstrong House Museum International Jazz Day Celebration! - April 30

(Screenshot by Patti D)
The Louis Armstrong House Museum's contribution to International Jazz Day opened with Catherine Russell (daughter of Luis Russell) and Champian Fulton singing On the Sunny Side of the Street. Ricky Riccardi moderated an online discussion with members of staff who have the amazing privilege of spending their working days in the Armstrong House.

Our own Rico Tomasso received plaudits for being a life-long ambassador of Louis' music, Rico's weekly Popup Louis live stream getting the thumbs up (That's My Home with Spats Langham singing gaining a global International Jazz Day audience).

The Armstrong House supports fellowships and we heard from two fellows who have spent much of this lockdown year working in the archives. From the indispensable janitor (he's been on site throughout the pandemic) to an executive director, it became clear that the Armstrong House is a big set-up. Huge numbers from around the globe flock to Corona, Queen's, NYC to experience something of the great man, his life, his music and this hour long live stream will serve to attract many more. Tony Bennett, Wynton Marsalis and Bette Midler have been visitors, who knows who'll be there when you walk through the door at 34-56 107th Street?!  Russell
