Bebop Spoken There

Ron Carter quoting Sonny Rollins: ''What we call jazz - that's keeping the world in equilibrium. I don't care what kind of music you like out here today. It all comes from jazz.'' (DownBeat August, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Album review: KNIMES* ACOUSTIC GROUP - Adventures in Improvised Music

knimes (drums/compositions); Jose Cervera (alto sax/flute); Yiannis Marinos (trombone); Ignacio Santoro (bass).

A tasty piece of   vinyl  consisting of six original compositions by knimes (Mattijs de Ridder) and brilliantly executed by an international quartet - knimes (Netherlands); Santoro (Argentina); Marinos (Greece) and Cervera (Spain).

knimes is described by his alter ego (de Ridder) as being a ''Genre blurring composer and producer who never neatly fits into one box. The music he makes is heavily influenced by his ongoing journey, exploring rhythms and sounds. His willfulness and strong need to improvise, together with his skills as a drummer, shape his sonic explorations. The result is the documentation of his continued adventures in music.''

If the above all sounds a bit heavy, don't go away yet as, in actual fact, whilst the above all applies, that musical journey which began in Den Haag also encompassed New Orleans and NYC. Those influences are in the mix.

Sure, it's free and boundary pushing but Jericho has yet to tumble. There's hints of the darker side of Ellington and Mingus as well as the futurism of Ayler and Kenny Garrett, not to mention his own visions of the future...

The two horns are outstanding, Cervera dances up and down the alto pushing it to the limit as he finds noises not every player knows how to find! He also makes nice sounds on flute. Marinos gets an earthy sound, growling like Tricky Sam or Jimmy Knepper, driven along by knimes' unrelenting attack and held in place by Santoro's rich, sonorous bass.  If the Mulligan Quartet had arrived 50 years later, chances are they would have sounded something like this.
