Bebop Spoken There

Steve Coleman: ''If you don't keep learning, your mind slows down. Use it or lose it''. (DownBeat, January 2025).

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

More of Rico's Best of Popup Louis - April 9

(Screenshot by Russell)
Akin to BBC speak - ie 'another chance to hear' = a repeat - Rico Tomasso, for a second week,  revisited some of the many accompanists who've helped out on these Friday night live streams over the last year. A couple of piano players for starters, Italian Luca Filastro followed by Nick Dawson, accompanying respectively, on I Double Dare You and Relaxin' at the Touro. Guitarist John Kelly (he appeared in Newcastle playing trombone and guitar with Frog and Henry), contributed an excellent solo on Memories of You with Rico playing flugelhorn and singing.

Denny Ilett's recent success leading a big band at Ronnie Scott's playing the music of Jimi Hendrix couldn't have been more different, musically speaking, from this evening's offering, early thirties' Armstrong playing I'm in the Market for You. Online comment alluded to the frequent interruptions in this week's session. Oh, such are the perils of this new-fangled technology! Oh, well, onto Fats Waller, Louisiana Fairytale, this time, Rico's accompanist, the excellent guitarist Nils Solberg.

Brian Kellock couldn't be left out, he wasn't, with the Scottish pianist joining Rico on Dear Old Southland, the first chorus taken at a stroll, the second at a gallop, Rico commanding, Kellock, equally so. As the set neared its end, a set increasingly plagued by technical glitches, pianist Craig Milverton (pictured) played Willow Weep for Me, Rico on the plunger, followed by an apposite From Monday On (think lockdown easing and all that!) featuring the sole banjo outing courtesy of Simon Picton. Another Popup Louis same time (7:00pm) next Friday.
