More than a decade ago Clarence Penn visited Newcastle as a member of fellow American Michael Janisch's touring quintet. On that occasion his Tyneside appearance was in the company of trumpeter Jason Palmer, Paul Booth and Jim Hart. Here at Small's the affable Penn led an all-star band playing a Greenwich Village brand of bop to post-bop material.
Trumpeter Mike Rodriguez and trombonist Marshall Gilkes (Maria Schneider, WDR Big Band) stepped up, their bold opening statements setting the tone. The rhythm section - a somewhat disparaging term for three top drawer musicians! - cruised in the fast lane. Pianist Glenn Zaleski (he's been live streaming a series of duo sessions with Ken Peplowski) rattled off a Blue Note homage to McCoy Tyner with bassist Matt Penman and a smiling Penn along for the ride.
Dexterity put Penn in the spotlight, the horns momentarily standing to one side, returning to take it out as a five-piece ensemble. A fine set drew to a close with Wayne Shorter's JuJu.
