John Garner (violin)
Today's Lit and Phil live stream concert wasn't jazz but it was John Garner. Violinist Garner turned up one night at the old Jazz Cafe looking to sit-in at the fortnightly jam session. That was two or three years ago and what a revelation it proved to be! Since then the softly spoken Garner has gone on to work with Paul Edis (Ushaw Ensemble and in a duo with the pianist) and form his own small jazz combo with the wonderful moniker Charkie Parlour.
Today's live stream courtesy of Newcastle's Literary and Philosophical Society presented a half hour set of Garner's half-forgotten compositions, dusted-off for the occasion. Following a brief introduction from the comfort of his home, our solo performer - solo with 'ambient' accompaniment - performed several pieces variously titled Pizzicato, Industrial, Dreams and Rainy Day. The composed and the improvised dovetailed seamlessly, Garner in total command of his instrument. As and when you see a John Garner gig in the listings be sure to get along, it'll be top quality stuff!
