Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Preview: The Return of Daniel John Martin

(Preview by Russell)

Born in Congleton, a childhood in Africa, student years in France, Daniel John Martin calls Paris home, an established figure on the capital's jazz scene. Manouche guitarists, Hot Club specialists, a spell touring with Didier Lockwood, violinist Martin has met and worked with the best. Later this month DJM, as he is known, will return to Bebop Spoken Here's heartland to play three concerts in as many days.

DJM will play gigs in Newcastle, Durham and Hexham. The first date at the Jazz Co-op (www.jazz.coop) on Thursday 20 Feb reunites DJM with Mick Shoulder's Swing Manouche. Bandleader Shoulder is known primarily as a first call double bassist but on this mini tour he will demonstrate his not inconsiderable abilities as a guitarist alongside six-stringer Giles Strong with Ian Paterson handling double bass duties. The quartet will play a second gig on Friday 21 at Durham's Claypath Delicatessen (6:30pm, telephone 0191 340 7209) and DJM's whistle-stop tour concludes on Saturday evening (22 Feb) in the basement venue below Haslam's of Hallgate (art gallery) in Hexham. The Vault's ancient stone built cellar is likely to sell out therefore it's advisable to book in advance - 01434 603884. Three gigs, each one highly recommended.

Sorry, Mick! I know the gig is at Core Music, silly error, I can't explain it other than incompetence!
