Once again the Serious bandwagon pulled up at Sage Gateshead for the annual International Jazz Festival.
Clare Teal gave an absolutely stunning performance which will be reported in detail later by Ann Alex.
However, prior to the main event, Paul Edis and students from the BABMUS course gave an impressive performance down on the Concourse. I only heard snatches as I was ensconced in the 'hospitality tent' (somebody's got to do it!) but what I did hear sounded good. Tom Dixon's Take 5 impressed as did the vocals from the various ladies in black.
After the enthralling performance by Ms Teal we headed for the number 27 only to be stopped in our tracks by some intriguing sounds from the Prohibition Bar which is situated midway between Sage Gateshead and the bus stop.
As the 27 was still a couple of pints away, this seemed like a suitable place to wait.
On stage, the Peg Powler Band were playing an appealing mix of folky western swing. Because of the lateness of the hour we only caught a couple of numbers but both were excellent.
On guitar, Ian Bartholomew - who also sang. On vocals, Sara Dennis who, I believe, earlier played uke and on fiddle Mags Forward who obviously doesn't come from Sunderland.
This made for a very pleasant end to the evening even if it wasn't exactly jazz.
Must catch them again.
