This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) More Phoenix Jazzmen

Another photo of the Phoenix Jazzmen, found by Patrick Brennan on the Evening Chronicle Facebook page. It was sent in by Dan Pye who, I guess, was Eddie Piper 's grandson. Piper is holding a tuba on this shot. Gordon Solomon is now on trombone and Brian Chester appears to be playing banjo. Billy Golightly on long model cornet and Eric Clegg on clarinet. Not certain of the drummer.
I gather this photo was taken shortly before Gordon Sumner joined the band which would probably date it about 1969.

Hi Lance. The date was in fact 1963. The band's banjo player was Terry Harvey but he was unable to make the occasion. Despite holding a banjo Brian Chester was on piano by then, I had only joined the band on trombone about two weeks previously. The drummer was Brian Liddell, an old school pal of mine. He moved to Cyprus and has only recently returned to live in Whitley Bay.
