Lauren White (vcl); Mitchel Forman (pno); Trey Henry (bs); Abe Lagrimas Jr. (dms); Andrew Carney (tpt); Andrew Synowiec (gtr); Hitomi (ten) + Lisa Liu String Quartet & Eclectic Plus One Brass Band. Review by Lance).
This is for me - songs from noir movies! Add the jazz and I'm in a tight corner.
Classic songs from classic movies:
He's Funny that Way (The Postman Always Rings Twice).
Again (Roadhouse).
I'd Rather Have the Blues (Kiss me Deadly).
I'm Gonna Go Fishing (Anatomy of a Murder).
Amado Mio (Gilda).
Laura (Laura)/The Night we Called it a Day.
You Kill Me (Macao).
Haunted Heart (Music USA).
When All the Lights in the Sign Worked (original by Joe Pasquale and Mark Winkler).
White doesn't attempt to copy the originals, instead, she brought Kathryn Bostic aboard. Together they created a richly textured CD filled with a range of moods and colours held together beautifully by White's smoky, smooth, voice. Trumpet, sax, guitar and strings feature and the overall effect is of Mickey Spillane or Raymond Chandler set to music.
Pour some Scotch on the rocks, light up a Lucky (but don't inhale) and listen...
Lance.
