Bebop Spoken There

Kurt Elling: ''There's something to learn from every musician you play with''. (DownBeat, December 2024).

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

CD Review: Chris Ziemba - Manhattan Lullaby

Chris Ziemba (pno); Hans Glawischnig (bs); Jimmy McBride (dms); Michael Thomas (alt/bs clt).
(Review by Lance).
I can't understand why it took me so long to get around to this album - it's so much more accessible than most of the pretentious outpouring of tortured souls on the discs that I receive for review. I don't suppose they [no names no pack drill] really are tortured souls - perhaps they should be!
Ziemba's soul certainly isn't tortured, How could it be? This is Manhattan, a cradle of metropolitan culture, of which he's painting a musical picture!

Ziemba won a jazz piano competition in Jacksonville back in 2011. A couple of years previous he appeared on the late Marian McPartland's legendary radio programme, Piano Jazz. As that show is widely regarded as one of the best ever, and long-running, live jazz shows it indicates just how highly Ziemba was rated even then.
Seven originals plus Harry Warren's I Wish I Knew make up the disc. It's such a delight to hear a pianist who displays the swing of Peterson with the subtlety of Bill Evans. I don't know how old he is but, from the photo, I guess he's young! Which means he may develop even further, and make more terrific albums such as this.
I digress, this is a trio, occasionally, a quartet session and the sidemen are integral with what's happening. Glawischnig doesn't grab the limelight but, when the spotlight falls he shines. And when it doesn't, he still shines complementing Ziemba every bar of the way.
Jimmy McBride! A great down to earth name for a drummer! Even before you hear him you know he's going to swing the ass off everyone. If he'd been christened Piers or Gervaise, I'd have reserved judgement but Jimmy? I just knew...
Michael Thomas makes fleeting appearances on bass clarinet and alto sax. His work on the latter instrument, really impressive - wanted more (I suspect he's Mike on alto and Michael on bass clarinet).
I may hear a better piano album this year but I'm not holding my breath!
