Advertised as guitar duo Mark Williams and Steve Glendinning last night's Jazz Coop gig found Pete Gilligan standing in for Mark who, as it turned out, was gigging in Wales. Nevertheless, this didn't detract from the music which, as expected from these two fine exponents, gelled from the first down beat to the final coda.
In many ways it could be said that the piano/guitar set up offered more variety than the guitar duo format and certainly both musicians impressed most of the Coop faithful.
A choice selection of standards and a few contemporary jazz pieces gave us the ingredients for the spice of life including A Foggy Day; There Will Never be Another You; Beautiful Love; Darn that Dream and All the Things You Are. Both guys managed to quote Fly Me To the Moon during the course of the latter tune but Pete also incorporated a bar or two of How High the Moon so I guess he got the lunar prize.
Horace Silver provided Summer in Central Park and Nica's Dream; Jobim contributed a number that sounded like the Beatles' You Know I'll Always Love You but wasn't! Charlie Haden had a couple including the delightful Our Spanish Love Song and there were compositions by Steve Swallow and Steve Kuhn - it was a good night for Steves!
And Peters too! although there was only one it sounded like more or is he really an octopus?
