Years ago I recall Ronnie Scott announcing a number as being from the LP Jim Dale sings Thelonious Monk. A tongue in cheek remark that, because it was so ludicrous, had the audience in stitches. Had he substituted Jim Dale with fellow rocker Tommy Steele and replaced Monk with Glenn Miller then, I'm sure, the response would have produced even more laughter!
And so it has come to pass that, during September and October of this year, Tommy Steele will be, God's Holy Honour, playing the lead in a stage version of The Glenn Miller Story!
My first reaction was that this beggars belief but, upon reflection, Steele has long since moved on from the 2 I's coffee bar to become an all round song and dance man and, preconceptions aside, it will probably be an entertaining evening.
There's a sixteen piece band so presumably Tommy won't be playing too much trombone.
