Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Josh Lane @ King’s Hall Newcastle Uni. November 6

Josh Lane (trumpet & flugelhorn), Ella El-Salahi (vocals), Jamie Lawson (piano), Tim Farrow (double bass) & Joe Cromey-Hawke (drums)
(Review by Russell)
Final year student Josh Lane (brass) shared the late afternoon student performances’ hour with an array of spectacularly good fellow students. An operatic soprano wowed the large turn-out with some Puccini, superb flautist Anne-Marie Rosa played a solo piece by Ibert and folk artists led by Callum Younger (bodhran) improvised a set of jigs. The latter clan could easily sit-in at any of the many of the jazz jam sessions around town.
Lane chose to play the music of Michael League’s Brooklyn hipsters Snarky Puppy. Lane checked-out the Puppies at Sage Gateshead earlier this year and, clearly impressed, chose to work on Shofukan. Opening on flugel (the wonderful Ella El-Salahi standing alongside him), Lane hit a groove. Pianist Jamie Lawson jabbed and stabbed, bassist Tim Farrow in tandem with drummer Joe Cromey-Hawke hammered it out on the raised stage. El-Salahi swooped down, around and in between Lane’s lines (flugel then trumpet). Josh Lane is in his final year of studies. At the end of the academic year take the opportunity  to hear him when he gives his degree finals’ recital.
Russell.
