Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Richard Pite, currently starring at the Classic Jazz Party on North Tyneside, talks to Clare Teal (Sunday, BBC Radio2, 9:00pm) about his Jazz Repertory Company, days before heading to this year’s London Jazz Festival to present several productions (an eagerly anticipated show must surely be the celebration of the Newport Jazz Festival). More from London on Monday night as Paul Jones (Radio 2, 7:00pm) presents a two-part review of the recent Blues Fest at the Royal Albert Hall. Listen out for Stanley’s Mitch Laddie! Earlier on Monday on In Tune over on Radio 3 (4:30pm) Alexander Stewart sings accompanied by harpist Alexander Thomas. Late Monday (11:00pm) Swiss trio Vein are joined by Greg Osby on Jazz on 3.
Jamie Cullum (Tuesday, Radio 2, 7:00pm) features Arun Ghosh and Cullum himself pops up on Wednesday’s In Tune (4:30pm) to plug his new big band-inspired CD. Friday’s Front Row (Radio 4, 7:15pm) talks to Jan Garbarek about his work with the Hilliard Ensemble. Finally, Radio 3 on Friday night devotes four and a half hours to the 2014 London Jazz Festival. Radio 3 Live in Concert: Jazz Voice (7:30pm) comes live from the Barbican. Guy Barker conducts the London Jazz Festival Orchestra in a star-studded vocal gathering including Dee Dee Bridgewater and Kurt Elling from America and Georgie Fame. At eleven o’clock Jazz on 3: London Jazz Festival Launch comes live from Ronnie’s, the line-up includes bassist Stanley Clarke, reedsman John Surman and vocalist Karin Krog, Louis Moholo-Moholo and Dee Dee Bridgewater.
