Bebop Spoken There

Jools Holland (on his 2026 spring/summer tour): ''With the mighty [R&B] Orchestra, our wonderful boogie woogie singers, and the brilliant Joe Webb opening the shows [including Darlington Hippodrome, June 19], we're in for some very special evenings of music.'' The Northern Echo February 5, 2026

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Jazz Café Jam Session October 7.

Peter Gilligan (pno); Paul Grainger (bs); Paul Wight (dms) + Richard Herdman/Bradley Johnston (gts); Matthew MacKellar (dms); Ray Johnson (tpt/flg); Will (vcl); Joel Brown (pno).
(Review by Lance).
There's always an air of anticipation prior to a jam session. Who will turn up? Will they cut it?
Tonight they cut it!
The trio provided the "Overture to a Jam Session" with My Romance; Hampton Hawes' Sonora and a sensitive rendition of Prelude to a Kiss. Sound! No problems in the engine room apart from Winnie Atwell's "other piano"!
Opening the fretting for the visitors was Bradley Johnston and a rather doomy piece entitled Saga of something or other. Not a foot-tapper. Nor was Scrapple From the Apple unless you wanted to risk breaking your ankle - it was fast.
Change of drummer and conversion of kit from southpaw to orthodox.
The newcomer was Matthew MacKellar - all of 16 year old but with the technique and flair of a seasoned pro. His reputation had preceded him (Chilli hot line) and he lived up to it as he Met Miss Jones, On Green Dolphin St finishing off with All the Things You Are.
Joel Brown was possibly even younger! sitting down at the upright and giving an impressive solo swing version of Tea For Two.
Where are they all coming from?
Ray Johnson came down from Rothbury to blow trumpet and flugel on Dear Old Stockholm and Stolen Moments along with Richard Herdman who jetted in from Leadgate complete with Gibson (175?). They were on the money.
Time for a song. Will, ex vocalist with the Lounge Lizards, gave out with Georgia and Moondance. A fine singer appreciated by those sitting down front but he needed more mic (or less band) to be heard to his best advantage by those further back.
Bradley and Richard provided a two guitar section on Anthropology then Richard played that well known Geordie love song by Cole Porter - Ye'd be so Neece to Gan Yam Te which coincided with my departure for the 22.57 Metro.
