Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

New CD/ From NCRO.

(Info from Phil Rutherford).
Earlier this year, the New Century Ragtime Orchestra recorded their second CD Singin’ in the Bathtub which is available on the Lake Records jazz label. To celebrate this event NCRO are holding a launch concert on Friday October 24  - and the good news is that it’s only a fiver to get in!
The venue is the upstairs lounge of the Millstone pub, Haddricks Mill Road, South Gosforth, Newcastle upon Tyne NE3 1QL.  The Millstone is a comfortable real ale pub with a large car park, and it’s also only a few minutes’ walk from South Gosforth metro station or via the 55 bus from Haymarket which drops you off at the door.
Tickets aren’t available in advance so it’s first come, first served - the lounge accommodates around sixty people, so if you can make it get there well in advance of the 7.30pm start.
If you can’t attend this concert but would still like a copy of the CD, email Dave Kerr at ragtimedavekerr@aol.com  and he’ll arrange to send one out by post (£10 + £2 postage).
Also, advance notice of the annual concert at Gateshead’s Caedmon Hall with regular guests  Keith Nichols on piano and Nick Ward on vintage percussion – this will be on Saturday, February 7, 2015, and tickets will be available in the usual manner, via Dave Kerr or Gateshead Council’s own box office.
The New Century Ragtime Orchestra
This twelve-piece orchestra plays music from the dawn of Ragtime in the 1890’s through to the early Swing Era of the 1930’s. Lovingly recreated from the original sheet music and painstakingly scored for full ensemble. NCRO perform not only ragtime composers such as Scott Joplin but also the classic jazz and hot dance music of the 1920’s, and the early swing of Duke Ellington.
