This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) RIP Herb Jeffries

Former Ellington singer Herb Jeffries died May 25 aged 100. Best known for his vocal on Ellington's 1941 recording of Flamingo Jeffries also sang with Earl Hines and Louis Armstrong.
He also played in movies where he was known as "The Bronze Buckaroo."

The last of Duke Ellington's greatest orchestra - 1940-43 - and an excellent singer in his own right.
