This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. King Bee Launch CD @ Hoochie Coochie. May 23


David Wilde (tenor/baritone/flute/vocal); Jason Holcombe (trombone); Richard Burns (trumpet); Chris Jelly (vibes); Steve Glendinning (guitar); Mark Hand (keys); Dan Brady (bass); Darren Moore (drums); Paul Crown (percussion).

Hoochie, deservedly crowded, has a buzz about it. A swarm of family, friends and fans have taken over - the pollen count is high. - one could say the room's a Hive of activity (Yes Joe Fowler is here) "Beekeeper" Les Aitch's management skills have worked well. King Bee look to be having a successful CD launch.
Graham Hardy can't make it so Newcastle's number one Australian trumpet player Richard Burns steps in and fills the gap brilliantly. David Wilde excites the room with his tenor/baritone and flute playing - he sings a couple too. I guess there aren't too many trombone players from Idaho available for gigs in Newcastle - I'm sure Jason Holcombe is the best of them!
Chris Jelly is, as ever, an inspiration. Not just in his playing which, needless to say, is superb but also in his attitude to life. However, it's unfair to single anyone out - they gel together perfectly and contribute in equal measure.
Most, if not all, of the numbers are from the CD and going by the enthusiastic response it should do good. Even my arthritic knee feels like dancing!
