Bebop Spoken There

Emma Rawicz: "In a couple of years I've gone from being a normal university student to suddenly being on international stages." DownBeat January 2026.

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

PINK LANE JAZZ CO-OP SHARE OFFER NUDGES HALF WAY MARK

Jazz fans are almost half way there in their bid to raise

£125,000 to turn an old Newcastle pub into a music venue.

A total of £57,100 of shares offered by the Pink Lane Jazz Co-op have been bought. This is 45% of the money needed to buy The Globe, off Scotswood Road, and convert it into the city’s newest Jazz, Blues and Latin attraction.
The share offer has attracted national interest with buyers coming from St Albans to Sheffield.
The biggest backers will be Co-operative and Community Finance.  They have pledged additional finance totaling £105,000 which is needed to complete the £230,000 purchase and refurbishment plan.
The 70 strong Co-op plans a presentation event tomorrow (Monday) with live music, food and wine to update investors on progress.
Dave Parker, a Co-op spokesman, said “This is a very exciting and rare venture – setting up a co-operative music venue – and one that’s committed to jazz.
“We have a long-term vision of establishing The Globe as the place in Newcastle to go to hear live jazz and other music that is outside the mainstream.  It will be a place where musicians learn, share and develop their skills – a hub for jazz education.  It may well be the first music venue to be owned by a co-operative committed to jazz.
“It’s also a good investment.  After three years investors can expect to earn good interest on their shares.
Buyers have until midnight March 21st to invest.  The quickest way is via
The presentation is planned for Monday evening (March 3rd) at 6.00pm, downstairs at the Literary and Philosophical Society, bottom of Westgate Road, Newcastle upon Tyne.

MORE ABOUT PINK LANE JAZZ CO-OP

BACKGROUND

Pink Lane Jazz Co-op was formed in early 2013 by a group of local residents, jazz lovers, musicians, poets and others who were inspired by Keith Crombie and the Jazz Cafe he set up and ran for many years until his untimely death on 29 December 2012.

INDUSTRIAL AND PROVIDENT SOCIETY

Pink Lane Jazz Co-op Ltd was registered as an Industrial and Provident Society on 5 March 2013

(registered number 31981 R)

OBJECTIVES

The objectives of Pink Lane Jazz Co-op Ltd are to carry on the business as a co-operative and to carry on any other business, trade or service and in particular to:
·       Continue the commitment to live jazz, poetry, dance and related arts established by the Newcastle Jazz Cafe in Pink Lane from 1991 to 2012.

MEMBERS AND BOARD, INCLUDING SKILLS

There are currently 72 members of the co-op (at 13/02/14).  We expect membership to increase significantly when the co-op issues shares to finance the purchase of an asset.
The co-op is managed by a board of directors who are appointed by the members.  There are currently eight members of the board as follows:
