This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. CD Review - Sector7: The EP

What a delight! Vocal groups of this calibre are few and far between and, in this country, Sector 7 are probably unique.
The brainchild of Sarah Ellen Hughes, who arranged 4 of the 5 pieces, Sector 7 came together to act as a backing group for Ms Hughes who candidly admits she'd got together a group of singers who were better than her! I wouldn't necessarily go along with that modest assessment but certainly all four are of comparable standard and, most importantly, compatible.
Gershwin's But Not For Me and Chick Corea's Spain, are pure Lambert/Hendricks/Ross which is praise at the very highest level whilst Stevie Wonder's Super Woman, Silje Nergaard's Be Still My Heart and She's Like The Swallow - which is actually a rather beautiful Newfoundland folk song arranged by Kwabena Adjiepong - owe their allegiance to no one other than.the perps.
Only complaint is the EP length as opposed to CD - I wanted more - much more!
Fortunately, more will be heard live when the group do an 18 date tour starting at the Scarborough Jazz Festival on Sept. 30 and culminating at The Sage, Gateshead on Dec. 14.
