Bebop Spoken There

Jennifer Wharton: "People forget that the trombone is so glorious. It can be like going to church, or getting ready for battle. It can be a lot of things....For a longtime I was the only female trombonist in New York," - (DownBeat May 2021)

Katherine Stone Quartet @t the Cherry Tree August 27

Katherine Stone (vocals); Dean Stockdale (pn); Stevie Doyle (dr); Stewart Davies (bs)
(Review by John Taylor).
Had my oldest son Phil here for a few days and introduced him to the Cherry Tree and Dinner Jazz. He was very impressed, not having come across this style of music night. Phil works in the hotel trade and travels the country staying and dining in good hotels. He gave the Cherry Tree 5 stars. Unbelievable quality and value for money with the Summer Special, now including a free glass of wine. My son he said he would return for another meal and that there would not be many places in the country doing around 60 covers on a Monday night.
Anyway on to the band. Where have Katherine and Dean been hiding? Excellent solo piano and vocal work on a couple of numbers as well as the four piece. A very eclectic mix of styles and rhythms so "the man of the mach award" must go to Stevie Doyle. I have been searching for words to describe Steve's top class contribution to Tyneside's jazz scene - playing as he does with so many different style bands. I my opinion he is our new Jacky Denton.
I saw this band at Hoochie for the first time a few weeks ago and decided I liked their style. Really impressed with Mick Danby's bass playing only to find he was deputising for Alan Rudd in Lickety Split the next week. Last night Stewart Davies was an excellent deputy for Mick. A full pad and he never missed a note. The band played on until 10 o'clock and it was noticeable that no diners left early, ordering extra coffees and drinks. They all wanted more of this band and their style of "Dinner Jazz" (in the style of the programme on Jazz FM!!)
