Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Katherine Stone Quartet @ Hoochie Coochie

Katherine Stone (vcl); Dean Stockdale (pno); Mick Danby (bs/backing vcl); Steve Doyle (dms).
(Review by Lance).
Besame Mucho suggested the Coconut Grove or the Stork Club back in the 1940s. A gentle rumba rhythm (or was it a beguine?) set the mood for the evening.Cheek to Cheek took us into safe songbook territory, impeccably sung and played with pianist Stockdale providing the jazz.
In all, I counted 30 songs over the two set gig all gems of the songwriters craft. An up tempo I Wish You Love scored heavily as did Hit The Road To Dreamland and the wonderful lyric -
Bye bye baby
Time to hit the road to dreamland
Don't cry baby
It was divine but the rooster has finally crowed
Time to hit the road.
Ramsay Lewis' Wade in the Water moved into funkier territory as did Street Life and Don't You Worry 'Bout a Thing.
Ms. Stone isn't an out and out jazz singer but she sits nicely on the fringe delivering the goods tastefully and effectively. A good stage presence suggests possibly a theatrical background  and the crowd appreciated her varied program.
Stockdale is a welcome addition to the local keyboard scene whilst Messrs Danby and Doyle kept it all together with the former throwing in the odd backing vocal.
Enjoyable.
