Bebop Spoken There

Sullivan Fortner: ''I always judge it by the bass player: If the bass player is happy, it's going to be a good night". (DownBeat, February 2025).

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

NCRO News

A New Century appearance is rather like waiting for a bus…  nothing for ages, then three come along at once!
On Saturday 1st September, we have the honour of opening Darlington New Orleans Jazz Club's new venue, the Studio at the Dolphin Centre, right in the centre of town after many successful years at the Arts Centre's Garden Bar.
The full address is the Dolphin Centre, Horse Market, Darlington DL1 5RP, and there is a lift to the Studio on the first floor which also has adjacent food and bar facilities.  Pay & display parking is available to the side and rear of the Town Hall.
The show starts at 12.30pm, and tickets (£8.50) are available in advance from the Dolphin Centre on 01325 388406 or on the door.  Please come along and give the club a good start in its new home.

Then on Saturday 22 September, we're at the Trinity Centre on Gosforth High Street, Newcastle upon Tyne NE3 4AG, as.   Our concert starts at 7.30pm, and tickets (£10) are available in advance on 0191 285 6130 or on the door.
Please click on www.trinitygosforth.org.uk/ourevents/jazz for further information about their excellent monthly series of jazz presentations.
Our final September appearance promises to be rather special… as part of the Balboa Gathering Vintage Swing Dance Festival, come along on Saturday 29 September and watch the band with balboa swing dancers from around the world!
If you're unsure what balboa is, click this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Imf35_aOcP0.  There's no obligation to dance, as seating is provided, and tickets (£10) are available from Navella on 07961 579988 ornavella@lovebalboa.com.
This is a new venue for us, the Beacon, Westgate Road, Newcastle upon Tyne NE4 9PQ, an iconic new building (so I'm told) on the site of the old fire station at the Wingrove Road junction, not far from the General Hospital.  Showtime at 9pm.
I hope you can join us at one or more of these events, and support live music (and dance!)
Phil Rutherford
The New Century Ragtime Orchestra
This twelve-piece orchestra plays music from the dawn of Ragtime in the 1890’s through to the early Swing Era of the 1930’s.
Lovingly recreated from the original sheet music and painstakingly scored for full ensemble, we perform not only ragtime composers such as Scott Joplin but also the classic jazz and hot dance music of the 1920’s, and the early swing of Duke Ellington.
