Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Pardon me boy...

Once again, the hugely popular 'Jazz 'n' Real Ale Trains' are running in June and July.
Northern Rail and its partner, Tyne Valley Community Rail Partnership, have received 100% positive feedback for these events - see attached pic's. You'll hear the best of 20's jazz featuring the music of Louis Armstrong, Kid Ory and Clarence Williams among others. Special guest musicians include Gavin Lee, clarinet (30 June and 7 July); from Hong Kong, trumpeter, Colin Aitchison (Sat. 7 July); sousaphone ace, Mike Harrison (Sat. 9 June) - expect to also hear 'jazz train' regulars Brian Bennett and Terry Harvey (banjos); Derek Fleck, (clarinet); Fred Rowe (trumpet) and Phil Rutherford, sousaphone - of course, if you prefer experimental and avant-garde free jazz, you may prefer to stay at home.
Join Fred Rowe's Railroad Stompers and the Vieux Carre Hot 4 on a scenic train ride through the Tyne Valley to Carlisle, calling at Wylam, Stocksfield, Riding Mill, Corbridge, Hexham, Haydon Bridge, Bardon Mill, Haltwhistle, Brampton and Wetheral.
All dates include a bar serving real ale from Matfen's High House Farm Brewery on the Newcastle to Carlisle train.
Saturday 9 June (Fred Rowe's Railroad Stompers)
Saturday 23 June (The Vieux Carre Hot 4)
Saturday 30 June (The Vieux Carre Hot 4)
Saturday 7 July (The Vieux Carre Hot 4)
Saturday 14 July (Fred Rowe's Railroad Stompers)
Depart Newcastle Central Station 7.25pm (check to confirm departure platform); return to Newcastle around 10.45pm.
COST:
Return tickets purchased at the booking office - if you are travelling with a friend or partner ask for 'Duo Tickets' (2nd ticket is half price) the cost is £24.30 - only £12.15 per person.
NB. No food available - bring a snack with you if you prefer.
See you on board,
Brian (I got my fare and just a trifle to spare).
