This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Mark Toomey Quartet @ The Cherry Tree.

Just as it seems we get few opportunities to hear Lewis Watson likewise Mark Toomey is another saxist who is never sufficiently on our radar.
However, tonight, at the Cherry Tree, we were given a rare glimpse of his scintillating alto playing which was the perfect hors d'oeuvre to Pan Fried Red Mullet, Nicoise Salad.
Opening with a bop line that I recognised but couldn't put a name to - the mic used for announcements fluctuated in clarity all evening - Mark paid lip service to his mentor Charlie Parker following up in the same vein with All The Things You Are. I followed up with Grilled Lamb Chop with Merguez Sausage, Hummus, Courgette and Chilli Compote. Both were delightful.

Next an original, was it Song For Lara (Laura?) whatever, it had an Art Pepper-like quality that was very good news indeed. Trieste, Alfie's Theme - another original One More Time (maybe?) finishing the set with What is This Thing Called Love? played at tempo de lick. And, I can honestly say I've found the answer to Cole Porter's eternal question! Love is eating Champagne and Elderflower Jelly, Blackberry Sorbet - mystery solved!.
Some great alto playing tonight as well as swinging piano from Jeremy, sound bass-work from Peter and compatible drumming from Richard - like the kitchen staff, you guys were cooking on gas tonight!
Circumstances decreed I couldn't stay for the second set but I'm sure it would be on a par with the first one.
