This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. The Melfi A.K.A. Val and the V's.

Trawling through a 1966 Crescendo looking for suitable quotes for Bebop Spoken There I came across a reference to a band called The Melfi who were resident at the ill-fated Piccadilly Club. They left before the place was burned down changing their name in the process to Val and the V's. Does anyone remember them?

Yes I do. Val is my aunt, Vinnie was my uncle and Viv the drummer was my dad. They went on to record with CBS and released several singles, the highest chart reaching was called "Do it again just a little bit slower" they then toured the UK and worked on Cunard Line for a while before splitting up in the mid seventies.
