CD Review: World Service Project – Alfie Ryner (Match and Fuse)

You’ve got to hand it to the French right now as being exporters of some of the best Jazz-Rock crossover groups as has once more come to my attention with the phenomenal quintet Alfie Ryner.

I’ve been enthusiastically listening to the latest Match and Fuse project CD brought to us care of The World Service Project and I am in eager anticipation of both bands forthcoming performances at the Star and Shadow in Newcastle this coming Wednesday 13th June, a Jazz North East presentation.

The Alfie Ryner Quintet creates a menacing sound; it growls, prowls, stalks and builds a seemingly relentless tension. The band has a way of forming dark pulsing hypnotic grooves that draw you in and leave you hanging. It’s pretty wild stuff, loud, cinematic, caustic and very very good. There are two tracks on this disc but the opener Kunda is particularly stand out
.

The World Service Project in contrast contribute a pacier and more playful sound to the record, the music is infinitely dynamic and allows itself to stretch out into a really tight kind of mutant Jazz-Funk blending and melting styles from all over the place, again two tracks are featured.

The final track on the disc is a live recording from the last Match and Fuse tour featuring The World Service Project and Redivider playing together at The Vortex Club in London. Two great tunes We Few and Sweet Time beautifully and seamlessly moulded together in a final blow out, it’s awesome.

If you happened to catch Synkoke from Norway with The World Service Project last year at The Star and Shadow then you’ll be well aware of what an exciting project this really is and you’ll need no further reason to get down to the gig and buy yourself a copy of this great CD whilst you’re there.
