A delightful and well executed album by a super singer and a top trio on a selection of tunes that live up to the albums title. They're among my favourites too.
Wallner has an appealing voice whether singing in English or Portuguese. Among the standards and jazz classics are two of her own compositions as well as an arrangement for voice of Caymmi and Pinheiro's mournful Velho Piano.
As leader, naturally Rottmayer has plenty of solo space and he makes good use of it. He is also featured on trio numbers sans voice: Kenny Barron's Voyage; Cedar Walton's Firm Roots, Love Dance and Tom Harrell's Sail Away. Bass and drums also impress.
Everything Happens to me swings along with singer and support gelling nicely. One Note Samba mixes two languages seamlessly Frank Loesser's Never Will I Marry is a gem, despite the strange Asiatic intro, whilst Wallner's own compositions: I'm Too Sweet and Love Ain't Free have meaningful lyrics. The former an earthy blues with a scat chorus. More scatting in the latter which is not unlike Moonglow.
All in all an excellent album by four of the finest in the middle west. Lance
