Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Press release: RADIOPHONICX

RADIOPHONICX is a communal listening event presenting International radio drama and sound art to a live audience in Newcastle upon Tyne.

I have curated and programmed RADIOPHONICX, a monthly series, that starts Saturday at 2pm on 29th November at Cobalt Studios.

The main aim of this project is to bring international audio drama, which is otherwise not easily accessible, to a live audience in the UK. Listening together in a relaxed atmosphere is a very unique experience, which I was able to taste at various international audio festivals in the last years.

Every monthly session of RADIOPHONICX will explore specific styles and themes of radio art, and I have invited a number of audio artist and musicians to talk about their unique approaches..

The first session will explore SONIC TEXTURES, which gives me the chance to  present Utopia - More and more, a collaboration with the fantastic musicians John Garner, John Pope, Sarra and myself.

We will also broadcast Animal Farm, an award winning series of audio shorts produced by Deutschlandfunk Radio (Wurfsendung) by Stefano Giannotti, a multi award wining audio artist and musician from Italy.

At the next session on Saturday the 13th of December we will focus on POETIC ENCOUNTERS. I am thrilled to announce that we will not only present two new audio productions, but also welcome Roxane Ca’Zorzi from Belgium to talk about her work and the early French surrealist Radio movement.
