Bebop Spoken There

Christian McBride: ''I believe we are living in a historically embarrassing moment in American history.'' - Downbeat December 2025

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Mike Hall Quartet @ the Moor Club, Stockport - Oct. 12

© Jeff Pritchard
Mike Hall (tenor sax); Andrzej  Baranek (keyboards); Bim Williams (bass); Eryl Roberts (drums)

What I like about Mike Hall is that he always puts on an interesting selection of tunes,  and tonight was no exception. We heard some Strayhorn, a great Lee Morgan ballad, some Jerome Kern and a favourite of mine - Gone With the Wind. Nothing to do with the film of the same name as Mike pointed out.

Another tune that I liked was Ghost of a Chance which made me think of a 78 record I may still own by  the great Charlie Ventura, a name you do not hear much about these days.

The second set  contained  more delights that were well received by the audience of about  60  jazz fans.

The only tune I was not too impressed by was The Window, written by Austrian Gunther Kuermayer in the style of Norwegian  reeds man Jan Garbarek  I'm afraid this genre is not to my taste.

Full marks to the rhythm section. They did a fine job of keeping things swinging and some of those tempos were very fast indeed.

It was another good night of modern jazz at the Moor Club. If I had to pick a highlight I think it would be Ceora  from the first set. Mike really  nailed this one.

Next Sunday night the Frank Griffith Quartet will  be here, 8:00-10:00pm.
Mike Farmer

Gone With the Wind; Ceora; Soon; Ghost of a Chance; The Song Is You; But Not For Me; The Window; A Flower is a Lonesome Thing; Four Brothers; Cherokee.
