Bebop Spoken There

Ron Carter quoting Sonny Rollins: ''What we call jazz - that's keeping the world in equilibrium. I don't care what kind of music you like out here today. It all comes from jazz.'' (DownBeat August, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Pete Tanton and the Cuban Heels @ King's Hall, Newcastle University - Oct. 9

Pete Tanton (trumpet, vocals, percussion); Alan Law (piano); Paul Grainger (double bass); Mark Robertson (drums)

Thursday lunchtime concerts in King's Hall invariably attract capacity or near-capacity audiences. This afternoon's concert featuring Pete Tanton and the Cuban Heels would follow suit. 'The band will announce pieces during the concert' stated the handout, departing from the usual practice of publishing a set list in advance.

The acoustics in King's Hall showcase brass instruments to best effect, but are less forgiving to percussionists. Mark Robertson knew the score: open hand, brushes, judicious use of sticks. Pianist Alan Law played King's Hall's Steinway as the acoustic instrument it is and bassist Paul Grainger positioned himself in the left back role, no doubt to hear and be heard by his bandmates.

The Cuban Heels opened their set of 45 minutes with Dark Eyes. Front and centre, Pete Tanton played trumpet and sang, the audience hanging on the lyrics to A Day in the Life. PT swayed on Sway, his bandmates doing their share of the swaying. Tito Puente's Oye Cómo Va is a winner every time, this afternoon no exception. As earworms go, Quando, Quando, Quando had more than one member of the King's Hall congregation humming the tune as they wandered down to Haymarket. It stays with you.

Pete Tanton and the Cuban Heels can be heard again a week tomorrow (Thursday 16 Oct.) at Newcastle Arts Centre's Black Swan (67 Westgate Road). Russell
