Term time, Thursdays in King's Hall, Newcastle University music students perform short sets to an audience of fellow students and interested members of the public. Anything from classical to folk (Newcastle University's highly-regarded folk degree course has produced many fine musicians) to rock and jazz, the weekly four o'clock session is an opportunity to check out what's happening.
This week, tenor saxophonist Olly Styles joined forces with post-grad bassist Jamie Watkins to play a couple of numbers. Olly has become a familiar face on the local scene, not least at the thriving, twice-monthly Black Swan jam session. This afternoon, two quick numbers and Olly was done. As accompanist to Olly, bassist Jamie opted to play acoustic guitar (his first instrument as a youngster). The Pat Metheny-Joshua Redman version of Eric Clapton's maudlin Tears in Heaven struck your scribe as an unlikely choice. A fine performance, no doubt about it. Perhaps the next time Olly appears in King's Hall we'll get to hear what he really can do! Russell
