This one's been lying on the back-burner since March. Every time I've been about to crank up the old Victrola something that looks better jumps the queue only for me to find out that, like most queue jumpers, it's all front and no substance. You definitely can't judge an album by its cover. Being Human is an obvious exception. Lynne Arriale not only looks human but her music conjures up the 'best expressions of what it means to be human'.
Thus the eleven relatively short tracks beautifully depict such emotions as: Passion; Courage; Love; Faith; Curiosity; Soul; Persistence; Heart; Gratitude; Joy and a reprise of Love - all composed by the Wisconsin born, North Florida based pianist. Not only does Arriale have the technique but also the ability and the feeling to deliver and equate with the message behind the titles.
For the reprise of Love she uses the voices on the Yamaha Clavinova to create a choral effect that is very moving and so effective that the 'voices' actually sound like voices. On the tracks with bass and drums alongside her, and that's the other ten, there's no shortage of swinging moments.
