Bebop Spoken There

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Dean Stockdale Trio @ the Central Bar Jazz Club, Gateshead - Nov. 3

Dean Stockdale (piano); Mick Shoulder (bass); John Bradford (drums)

There's something about the Central Bar Jazz Club that's hard to describe. The darkened room creates an atmosphere that gives you the feeling of being anywhere. New York, London, Paris, anywhere but Gateshead. Although it's in an upstairs room, the ambience is that of a cellar club back in the day when you saw the band through a magenta mist or, to be more accurate, cigarette smoke.

Fortunately, the cigarette era is gone and the air is cleaner and the music is as good as ever - at least it was this afternoon.

Dean Stockdale is an unashamed admirer of Oscar Peterson which isn't a bad role model for a pianist to have. He pays tribute to the great man albeit not without losing his own identity which, in itself, is prodigious. Particularly impressive are his florid, out of tempo, intros to the ballads.

On bass, Mick Shoulder reminded us of why he is one of the north east's A-listers on his instrument with meaningful solos that were much appreciated by the enthusiastic audience.

John Bradford is rapidly becoming the man to call when percussion is required and justifiably so.

The programme comprised a selection of standards associated with Peterson, a couple of his originals along with three of Stockdale's own compositions. Is there a better way to spend a Sunday afternoon, musically speaking? You tell me. Lance
