Bebop Spoken There

Van Morrison: ''Basically, I'm coming from jazz. Not pop, not rock, not what's commercial. That's where I started, and that's still where I am. I feel the same as I did when I was listening to Louis Armstrong, Lead Belly, Jelly Roll Morton''. (The Northern Echo, 12 June 2025).

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

The Classic Jazz Party: Friday afternoon @ the Village Hotel, North Tyneside - Nov. 1

Musicians and audience turned up from far and wide at the Village Hotel for the annual, and appropriately named, International Classic Jazz Party. Yes, they came from NYC and other locations in the US, from various European towns and cities, maybe even further afield as well as from all over the UK.

They came to play, dance and listen to the jazz and swing from the 1920s & '30s. Each set was themed and today's opened with a tribute to the late Mike Durham who originally inaugurated the three day event as the Whitley Bay Jazz Festival back in (circa) 1990. The opening set also centered around the annual Young Talent Award which this year went to multi-instrumentalist Gavin Rice from Cape Cod MA.

The other sets on this opening afternoon session were sets paying tribute to Charlie Creath & Dewey Jackson, Teddy Wilson & Billie Holiday, Gene Austin, The Piccadilly Revels Band and Benny Goodman & His Rhythm Makers.

The playing was impeccable and authentic - sometimes more authentic than the originals!

A break for dinner before the show resumed. As an added bonus, there's also a jazz book and CD stall. Needless to say I left heavy laden with reading material. Get your reservations in now for next year. Lance
