My father once gave me some invaluable advice. He said to me, "Son, before you ask a girl to marry you, take a good look at her mother because that's what she's going to look like in thirty years time."
I'm pleased to say that I followed that advice.
It could also be applied to Kenny Graham and his Afro-Cubists.
Back in the day when I was discovering girls and jazz I thought that this band was the greatest thing ever (apart from girls) and I began buying their records. Listening again all these years later I can't help but think as to how tame it sounds compared to Mongo Santamaria, Tito Puente, Chucho Valdes or Arturo O'Farrell to mention but a few.
Still, at that time they were quite unique in Britain and, in their own way, were trailblazers. They certainly had the edge on Edmundo Ros or Roberto Inglez.
Yet again the Esquire label kept the flag flying for British jazz. Lance
