This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Never mind the vinyl, dig the shellac (but don't drop it!)

Well I've finally managed to connect a turntable that plays at (circa) 78rpm up to a pair of speakers. This I did by putting a line in from said turntable to another system (which doesn't spin at circa 78rpm) via a CD socket. The reason for this is I have literally hundreds of 78rpm discs that have been gathering dust since Kid Ory was a kid (slight exaggeration!) and so I thought I'd indulge myself on a journey down memory lane and pick out one per day on an alphabetical basis.

Ot course, as the saying goes, nostalgia isn't what it used to be. The turntable, whilst being spot on for 33rpms and 45rpms seems to be less precise when asked to do 78 laps per minute the result being rather like a runner doing interval training. Maybe with use it will get the idea.

For today's disc I've chosen Louis Armstrong  and his Hot Five playing Cornet Chop Suey backed with Muskat Ramble (spelling as per the label) recorded in February 1926. This was an eyeopener for me. I'd never heard trumpet/cornet playing like this before and never would again until I discovered Dizzy Gillespie. Armstrong had opened the door for Eldridge, Shavers, McGhee, James and the others who followed.

Apart from the music, the cardboard cover is in itself a curio. Peakes, 30-32 Grey Street, Newcastle upon Tyne. Can anyone remember it? I can't. It's probably a trendy wine bar now. Lance

30-32 Grey St. is now Café Mercy. No doubt the music is somewhat different to when they sold pianos and 78rpm records!
