This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Russ Morgan Quartet @ Central Bar, Gateshead - Sept. 1

Central Bar Jazz Club resumed after its summer break and what a corker it was! Drummer Russ Morgan has recently returned to live performance and it's as if he had never taken a sabbatical. The Russ Morgan Quartet is a relatively new outfit yet it's as if the four musicians - A-listers all - had been playing together for years. 

Two sets of stupendous musicianship - stellar solos and remarkable group interplay - were met with enthusiastic applause from an attentive audience. John Scofield's Don't Shoot the Messenger, Kenny Garrett's Wayne's Thang, Julian Nicholas' A Thousand Ships and an arresting, heart-stopping take on Yes or No with its Trane vibe and Jim Hall's Frisell Frazzle made for a thoroughly entertaining afternoon.
