This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. The Tannery jam session - Sept. 11

Joe Steels (guitar, bass guitar); Paul Susans (bass guitar); Dan Ward (drums) + John Weaver (trumpet); Jane ? (alto sax); John Rowland (tenor sax); Chris ? (guitar); Tony Wilson (drums); Phil ? (guitar, keyboards)

In John Hirst's absence, Dan Ward stepped into the breach. Joe Steels, Paul Susans and Dan provided solid rhythm section support to allcomers. The Tannery at the bottom of Gilesgate is home to Hexham's monthly (second Wednesday) jam session. Numbers are picking up (audience and participants) and if perseverance gets you anywhere, the Tyne Valley jam session is going places!

Straight No Chaser, Manhã de Carnaval and I'll Be Seeing You got things underway. Trumpeter John Weaver is a fixture here at the Tannery and he opted to play All the Things You Are. Tenor saxophonist John Rowland made the trip from Newcastle (hopefully other Tynesiders will follow JR's lead) and Well You Needn't worked well. Guitarist Phil favoured Corcovado (Joe Steels on bass guitar!) and, during the course of two sets, several local musicians sat in, making for an enjoyable night. The Tannery's jam session signed off in style with Eddie Harris' Cold Duck Time. 

The next jam session night will be Wednesday October 9 (it's always the second Wednesday in the month), seven o'clock through 'til nine. Russell
