Bebop Spoken There

Emma Rawicz: "In a couple of years I've gone from being a normal university student to suddenly being on international stages." DownBeat January 2026.

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Press release: London Symphony Orchestra and Cassie Kinoshi’s seed. Collective Join Forces For London Jazz Festival 2024

British composer, arranger and saxophonist Cassie Kinoshi and her Mercury Prize-nominated ensemble seed. are set to collaborate with the London Symphony Orchestra as part of this year’s London Jazz Festival. Entitled Nature’s HEART, the concert marks Kinoshi’s latest collaboration with the London Symphony Orchestra following her involvement with the LSO Panufnik Composers Scheme, and will take place at the Barbican on Thursday November 21, 2024.

A dynamic group of musicians pushing the boundaries of contemporary jazz, seed. sit firmly at the very forefront of the flourishing London scene, combining influences from various musical traditions to create a unique sonic experience. Their upcoming collaboration with the LSO will present a specially curated programme featuring a mix of Kinoshi’s original compositions, plus Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6 and Anna Clyne’s This Midnight Hour, all under the direction of esteemed conductor Ben Gernon (BBC Two’s Holst: The Planets with Professor Brian Cox, Channel 4’s Addicts’ Symphony).

Led by award-winning saxophonist Cassie Kinoshi, an alumna of the LSO Panufnik Composers Scheme, seed. formed in 2016 and released their debut album Driftglass via the Jazz re:freshed label in 2019 before being nominated for a Mercury Prize the same year, winning an Ivors Academy Award and receiving rave reviews (“heartfelt and accomplished brew of African, Caribbean and urban dance grooves” – Guardian). The ten-piece collective released their second studio album in March earlier this year; a four-part suite for an 18-piece ensemble including musicians from the London Contemporary Orchestra.

The LSO’s concert with Cassie Kinoshi is the latest in a long line of boundary-pushing London Jazz Festival collaborations. Previous shows have featured cellist Abel Selaocoe, saxophonists and BBC Young Musician recipients Soweto Kinch and Jess Gillam as well as other collaborations outside of the capital’s annual jazz festival such as American hip hop group Cypress Hill and British electronic musician Floating Points performing with master jazz saxophonist Pharoah Sanders.
